Getting a puppy used to grooming requires patience, gradual progression, and positive associations. The earlier you start, the easier it will be!
1. Start Gently
From the moment your puppy arrives home, handle them regularly:
- Touch their paws, ears, and tail.
- Hold your dog for a few seconds by the fur near their lips—this prepares them for head trimming later.
2. Get Them Used to Tools and Sounds
Gradually introduce grooming accessories:
- Brush, comb, nail clippers…
- Clippers or hair dryer: turn them on at a distance, then gradually bring them closer. Also let them feel the vibrations.
Let them sniff each tool without pressure, then reward them with a treat.
3. Keep Sessions Short
- Start with just a few minutes.
- Gradually increase the duration over time.
4. A Gradual Bath
- Use lukewarm water and start by wetting the paws, then the rest of the body.
- Avoid the head at first.
5. Choose a Professional Groomer for the First Real Grooming
When your puppy is ready, take them to an experienced groomer:
- Choose someone experienced with puppies.
- Opt for a first session that’s short and gentle.
At Barks & Bubbles, we love welcoming puppies and make sure their first experience is as pleasant as possible. Book an appointment today!
